What is a Large Language Model (LLM)?
A Large Language Model is a type of AI system trained on massive volumes of text data to understand, generate, and reason with human language. LLMs are built on transformer architecture and can perform a wide range of language tasks including writing, summarizing, translating, coding, and answering questions, all without being specifically programmed for each task.
How It Works
LLMs are trained by exposing them to enormous text datasets sourced from books, websites, research papers, and code repositories. During training, the model learns to predict the next word in a sequence by processing billions of examples and adjusting its internal parameters through backpropagation. Over time, this process allows the model to develop a deep understanding of grammar, facts, reasoning patterns, and even tone. The core architecture behind LLMs is the transformer, which uses a mechanism called self-attention to weigh the importance of every word in a sentence relative to every other word. This allows the model to understand context across long passages rather than processing text word by word in isolation. The larger the model, measured in parameters, the more nuanced and capable its understanding becomes. Once trained, LLMs are typically fine-tuned on specific tasks or aligned with human preferences through a process called Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). This final stage shapes the model to be more helpful, accurate, and safe in real-world interactions, producing the conversational AI assistants widely used today.

Multimodal LLMs go beyond text by processing and generating content across multiple formats including images, audio, and video alongside language. Models like GPT-4o and Gemini Ultra fall into this category, enabling richer interactions such as analyzing charts, describing images, and responding to voice inputs.
