What is Scrum?
Scrum is an Agile framework used by software development teams to manage and deliver complex projects through short, structured work cycles called sprints. It defines clear roles, events, and artifacts that create a predictable rhythm of planning, execution, and review, allowing teams to deliver value incrementally while continuously improving how they work together.
How the Scrum Process Works
Product Backlog Refinement
The Product Owner maintains a prioritized list of features, fixes, and improvements called the product backlog, continuously refining and reordering it based on business value and user feedback.
Sprint Planning
The team selects high-priority backlog items, breaks them into tasks, estimates effort, and agrees on a sprint goal that defines what success looks like at the end of the cycle.
Daily Execution and Coordination
Developers build and test features during the sprint while coordinating through daily standups, keeping everyone aligned on progress, priorities, and any blockers that need immediate attention.
Review and Retrospective
At sprint end, completed work is demonstrated to stakeholders for feedback, then the team reflects internally on process improvements to carry forward into the next sprint.
What Are Scrum Events?
Sprint
The core unit of Scrum, a sprint is a fixed-length work cycle, typically one to four weeks, during which the team builds and delivers a potentially releasable product increment based on agreed goals.
Sprint Planning
A collaborative session where the team and Product Owner agree on which backlog items to tackle, define the sprint goal, and break selected work into actionable tasks the team can execute immediately.
Daily Scrum
A brief fifteen-minute daily meeting where each team member shares what they completed yesterday, what they plan to do today, and any obstacles blocking their progress to keep the entire team aligned.
Sprint Review
An end-of-sprint meeting where the team demonstrates completed work to stakeholders, collects real feedback, and updates the product backlog based on what was learned during the sprint cycle.
Sprint Retrospective
A dedicated session for the team to honestly assess what went well, what did not, and what concrete changes to implement in the next sprint to improve collaboration, process, and delivery quality.
